SARA Honors MJM+A Design Studio

The firm of MJM+A Design Studio was honored by the New York Chapter of the Society of American Registered Architects, SARA, at their 2010 Professional Design Awards reception at Battery Gardens in lower Manhattan.  The award recognizes the creative vision of the firm for its bold proposed work at 6 E. 45th Street located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan.

The design team’s dramatic design re-imagines the existing midblock facade by taking advantage of the site’s streetfront setback to create a new dynamic rolling profile that addresses the busy Avenues between which it falls.  Through the use of a new ‘Trespa’ rain screen over the existing masonry facade the design team folds orthogonal surfaces into a new fluttering, rippled facade that plays peek-a-boo with pedestrians along 5th and Madison Avenues.  The undulating overhangs create an interaction with the sidewalk along 45th street that is rarely achieved by narrow midblock facades.  The project represents a unique design response to the management team’s efforts to increase energy efficiency in its properties.  As such, this design in fact originates from a number of energy efficient upgrades such as exterior insulations at the façade and roof as well as a window replacement program.

The project, which is currently in negotiation with construction management teams, will be one of the first such “re-cladding” and repositioning projects for Trespa and All Clad in the city.  MJM+A recently teamed up with Trespa on one of their latest projects, Ink 48, a new hotel in Midtown West & the design team is currently working with 6 E. 45th Street’s management team Silk and Halpern on repositioning projects at their east side & midtown properties.

Press Preview – A Massive, Massive New Roof Deck

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

There are roof decks and then there are roof decks.

On one hand you have the miniscule, tar-covered, makeshift varieties.

Looming at the complete opposite end of the spectrum is a gigantic new looker we’d like to introduce you to called Press Lounge, 3,000 square feet of outdoor gorgeousness at the Ink48 Hotel in Hell’s Kitchen—it’s massive, it has views for miles, and it opens this Friday to kick off rooftop season in a monumental way.

Tucked on the far reaches of West 48th Street, Press is the kind of rooftop that you’ll want to sink into after work on a sunny day, order a few caipirinhas and salumi plates and waste away hours as the hazy sunset gives way to the bright lights of Midtown.

There’s no bottle service, no pumping house music and no door policy—just a bunch of couches, settees, plants, 360-degree views and a long wading pool that’s meant to be decoration only (we consider your feet decoration).

And while you may be tempted to leap the fence and go for a more substantial dip in the small swimming pool that’s tucked away on the Hudson-facing side of the roof, know that it will soon be replaced with a garden to serve the restaurant, and a table for farm dinners later this summer.

When one door closes…
